Food security.
Environmental benefit.
Profitable businesses.
I’m Ángel, a scientist trained in crop improvement and a venture builder. I believe we can achieve food security sustainably while building profitable businesses. I’m passionate about developing solutions that meet agriculture’s needs, benefit the environment, and give people an economic reason to adopt them.

Scientific depth. Experience building ventures.
My experience spans crop-improvement research and venture building, from ideation to incorporation: identifying problems, connecting them with science, and shaping the technical and commercial case for a company.
1PhD in Plant Breeding and Plant Genetics
University of Wisconsin–Madison
My scientific career began at UW–Madison. I went on to research faculty work at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa and teaching at Hawaiʻi Pacific University, before becoming group leader in crop editing at the Hawaii Agriculture Research Center.
2Deep Science Ventures
Associate in Agriculture, 2021–2025
Venture Creation Consultant, since 2025
At DSV, I worked on agriculture venture creation through the TABI program, using first-principles thinking and an outcome-focused approach to build ventures where society and the planet can thrive.
I now advise PhD students in the Venture Science Doctorate (VSD), helping them refine scientific hypotheses, identify meaningful applications, and develop viable venture pathways.
3Lilliput Technologies & Velocipetal
Past contributions at Deep Science Ventures
At DSV, I led the creation of Lilliput Technologies, focused on climate resilience in crops through nanotechnology, and Velocipetal, focused on expanding access to non-GMO plant breeding.
Curiosity about the science. Discipline about the opportunity.
Not all good science makes a good business. The task is to understand where scientific potential, a meaningful need, and a viable business model come together.
1Understand the system before proposing a venture.
Who experiences the problem? What do they do today? Where do performance, cost, incentives, and adoption meet?
2Make the assumptions visible and testable.
Distinguish what is demonstrated from what is plausible. Focus the next step on evidence that could change the decision.
3Let the opportunity determine the vehicle.
A company, a partnership, licensing, or further research: the route should follow the evidence and the institution’s objectives.
Connected interests. Distinct roles.
AGC and Venture Stage Lens reflect two connected interests: identifying ventures worth building, and helping science-based ventures develop an investment case that stands up to scrutiny.
Agro-Genomics Consulting
FOUNDER
Which agri-food ventures should be built?
Venture discovery and development for universities and research institutions. Connecting industry needs with relevant science, then testing the case for building.
Venture Stage Lens
CO-FOUNDER
What does the investment case need to withstand?
Expert-led support for science-based ventures: examining evidence, risks, and investment readiness to give founders clearer direction.
Connect university science with problems people need solved.
Universities hold a wealth of scientific knowledge and technologies. I want to help connect that potential with a clearer direction: solving problems that matter to people.
That can mean mapping an important industry or societal problem against science that already exists. It can also mean guiding further research toward a specific outcome. In both cases, the opportunity becomes clearer when we understand who needs a solution, what would change for them, and why they would choose to use it.
Commercial access and investment are part of that journey. The more fundamental question comes earlier:
Would anyone care if this existed?
That question shapes what I want to build through AGC: ventures rooted in relevant science, directed toward real agricultural and environmental needs, and supported by a business model that gives the solution a reason to endure.
What is your institution trying to make possible?
If you are exploring how your research could address a meaningful challenge in agriculture or food, I’d be glad to hear what you are considering.
